Patio by Lake
At this Mercer Island home, smooth arcs of paver patio radiate out from curved concrete benches, opening the yard up to lake views. The concrete benches function as both a convenient seat overlooking the yard and water, and as a retaining wall with mini patios tucked in against its lower level. These cozy areas, enclosed by plantings, offer spaces just made for entertaining or outdoor dining. A paver path wends its way down to the water, tying in a dock perfect for swimming or boating.
This versatile space offers the promise of use by all ages, with space for parents to relax while children play in the open yard nearby. Overall, it offers nice transitions: between the various types of the space, between house and yard, and between land and water.
Lakefront Fireplace
We took a similar approach at this home on west Mercer Island. A sandy beachfront offers smooth water access for swimming and boating, while a cozy firepit area serves as an overlook. You can imagine sitting by the fire on a warm summer night after a dip in the lake. Large stones offer natural seating, as well as complimenting the flagstone surroundings and smooth stone fireplace top. And the stone steppers with resilient planting between can stand up to back-and-forth traffic as kids scurry between the two.
